What is Common Core?
Before the 2012-2013 school year, North Carolina upgraded our standards and adopted the National Common Core standards. It is very similar to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study but is just presented in a different way with added rigor. Every state except for Virginia and Texas have adopted this curriculum.
In first grade, we focus on number sense and adding/subtracting in math. In literacy we focus on reading comprehension, writing sentences and paragraphs. In science students will learn comparing/measuring, all about pebbles, sand/silt, and organisms, and complete a unit on balance & motion. In social studies, first graders learn about Communities, history, geography, civics, government, economics, and personal financial literacy.
