Weekly Reader Response
Each week (beginning in September sometime), your student will cut and paste a writing task/prompt in his/her Weekly Reader Response notebook. They will have brought home a book in their Weekly Reader Response Bag (ziploc bag with their number on it). Students should follow each night's directions as to what tasks they need to complete. Each night your child should first read the book out loud to an adult at home. He/she should then answer the question using complete sentences, capital letters at the beginning of sentences, proper punctuation, and make sure to re-word the question in his/her answer. Answers to questions should include supporting details and explanations as to why the text supports their answer. Use the example below to help guide you in instructing your student to complete the assignment correctly.
Example Question: Describe the setting in your journal.
Example Answer: The setting in the story (insert title of book here) is at a park. I know this is the setting of the story because the author talked about the characters playing at a part. I also know this because the pictures showed trees, benches, and a swing-set. These clues helped me to figure out the setting.
Below you will find an example of some questions. These are merely just examples of the types of questions your child will be asked to answer. The actual questions will be posted on the homework page, and your child's Weekly Reader Response notebook.

Student Work Examples
Please use the example below to help guide your student in making sure they are completing their Weekly Reader Response correctly. All phonics, tricky words, etc. should be written in the blank space above the lines. The lines are where students should write about their setting (Monday) characters (Tuesday) problem (Wednesday) and retell (Thursday).
Checking Work
It is the student's responsibility to turn in their Weekly Reader Response journal to the big green bin on the reading table each morning when they unpack. I will check journals after the bell rings. Although Wake County does not allow for homework to be graded. This practice is EXTREMELY important. Written comprehension is one of the most important skills your child needs to be successful in the upper grades including 2nd grade. While we practice this skill at school, reinforcing this skill at home is vital. Please use the pictures and explanations below to understand how your child is doing. I am also marking in my grade book when this assignment is completed or missing. This information will help me to understanding whether or not your student is practicing at home. Practicing skills learned at school at home, is one of the easiest ways to help your child be successful in school and also helps them to make the most growth. Together, we can achieve great things and support your student in the best way possible!
Blank
Blank means that either the Weekly Reader Response journal was not turned in, or it was not done.

Blue Pen Check
Blue check means that an effort to complete the work was clearly made. This means that either the work was completed but not done correctly, or that only part of the assignment was done. This could also mean that there wasn't enough detail in the answer provided. For example, simply stating the setting is not considered proficient. You student should also include a detailed description of the setting.
