Perfusionist
Students loved learning about what a Perfusionist does. Our class learned that they must be focused, self-disciplined, gentle, and have at least 6-7 years of schooling beyond high-school to have this career. Students were very interested in how the chest cavity it opened up during surgery and what the hospital is like. Mrs. Englehart taught our class about the tools and tubing needed to help someone stay alive during surgery and why it is important to have this career. Who knows, maybe we have some future Perfusionists in our class!
Mrs. Englehart showed three short clips about being a Perfusionist. Click below to review this information at home!

Personal Chef
Mrs. Lewandowski came to our classroom on Tuesday and educated us on being a personal chef. We learned all about "eating the rainbow" and what vitamins certain fruits and vegetables have in them that are good for our bodies. She showed us how to make a healthy and quite yummy snack that was devoured by most students! They were begging for more! How often does that happen with young children and healthy snacks? What a great career and fun way to earn a living our class decided!
Our Green Thumbs - Organism Unit
Each student planted two lima beans. Students used Ziploc bags, moist paper towels to act as the dirt, and two beans. First, students wet the paper towel and squeezed out the extra water. Next students wrapped the seeds up in the paper towel. Then students put the towel with the seeds inside their plastic bag. Finally, students closed the bag and left a small hole where the bag was not completely closed for air to get in. We hung the bags with tape on the windows to our classroom. Condensation formed in the bag which helped to nourish the seeds and keep the environment inside the bag wet. We hope you enjoyed planting your lima bean plants at home and will continue to practice using your green thumbs! Happy planting!!
STEAM Night
Cultural Arts Assembly - Asian Shadow Puppets
Students attended the cultural arts assembly this morning! The program included a shadow puppet show. Students learned how characters such as mickey mouse are very similar to those characters of famous shadow puppets in Indonesia. They also learned about traditional beginnings to shadow puppets and were able to listen to traditional music from the Indonesian islands. The plot of the shadow puppet was centered around animal needs. What a great introduction to our 4th quarter science unit on Organisms.
Dental Hygienists Visit
Two dental hygienists came to visit our class today. They discussed the important of dental hygiene and how students can do their part to take care of their teeth. A few volunteers were able to practice brushing the correct way. They reviewed how to brush in small circles, brush the front, top and back of each tooth. Students learned how to avoid bad breath by brushing your tongue and even look at how some tooth brushes even have a built in tongue brush on the backside of the bristles. Students learned about the process of teeth falling out and adult teeth coming in. Students talked about how important is to take care of your teeth and especially your adult teeth. Most students knew that you should go to the dentist once every six months and to brush your teeth at least twice a day but three or four times is even better if you can! Students learned about molars and wisdom teeth and asked great questions like: "Why do some people get braces?" Students brought home a goodie bag with toothpaste, a toothbrush, timer, and plaque tracker. Enjoy the goodies and happy brushing!
Discovery Education Live Reading
Students in our class participated in a virtual field trip to George Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University where Mrs. Bush read Rushmore by Lynn Curlee. Students used their knowledge of Mount Rushmore from their Time For Kids magazine to ask questions and make connections to the reading. Mrs. Bush answered questions live after the conclusion of her reading. Over 60,000 students and educators world wide participated in this unique learning experience. Schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and Ghana participated! Thanks Discovery Education!!!

Counting On & Counting Back With Brain Pop Jr.
Math (Sept. 30)
Today we practiced how to use a number line to help us count on and count back. We watched a short video clip from Brainpop Jr. that taught us how to count on with one, count on with two, count on with three etc. After we watched Tim and Moby (characters from BrainPop Jr.) we created our own math problems that required counting on and counting back to solve. We discussed which way on the number line we draw our humps when we are counting on, or adding, when we are adding (to the right ---> ) and which way we count back on the number line when we are counting back, or subtracting (to the left <--- ). Students used a variety of manipulatives to help them solve their problems and show their work.
